first day!

So today was my first day at work and it was awesome!! I start at 730 every day and most days I'll be off by noon! My mom thinks I'm a slacker, but by noon I'll have already worked with the grade 2, 3,4 and 5 class.classics kind of cool cause each grade learns about the same subject at the same time, just at a different level. For example, they're all learning about the human body parts in english right now, but the grade 2's learned Simon says type parts like eyes, nose, ears, foot etc. The grade 3's learned how to better pronounce those parts, the grade 4's learned the internal organs like the lungs, heart, bladder etc., and the grade 5's had to answer actual questions about the body and its functions. the kids are all soo adorable and soo eager to learn. It was a pretty amazing thing to see. There's definitely a huge difference between them and Canadian kids their age. Before they even knee my name I was swarmed by a dozen girls and even boys hugging me and trying to talk to me. I was actually really surprised by how much English they already knew. As for the school, I knew the conditions would be bad, but they're worse than I expected. Its really sad, their soccer balls are just hard, flat and stripped down to the last layer. The bladders must be burst, it was a heartbreaking sight. My dad might have cried. Haha! Anyways sorry for the lack of paragraphs and punctuation. I just figured out how to connect to the Internet from my iPod at the pool! I haven't figured out how to make paragraphs on it yet. But that means I can blog and check my email from it which is nice. But I need to swim haha way too hot! Love and miss you all. And again, thanks for everyonea support in getting me here. I think its going to be life-changing! I'm so thankful to everyone. :) xoxo

PURA VIDA!

Helloooo everyone!

Sorry it has taken me soooo long to write, but as you can imagine, leaving the sun to come into an internet cafe hasnt been a tempting idea. Dont worry though, I got a cheap cell phone so I could call my mom and keep her sane.

Day 1:

Interesting. After being exhausted while I was travelling all day, I had a hard time bouncing back and adjusting right away. Mercedes and Flor (my host grandma and momma) are real gems though, so that definitely helped. I never realized how lonely it is to not understand anyone and have nobody understand you. Either way, a few tears here and there and the plaque Thomas gave me  with the help of Jordan´s spanish phrase book have helped a lot. One quick pep talk to myself and I´m good to go! My room is tiny which was expected, my bed..not comfortable, also expected. AND its so hot here - expected.  I miss home already, but I know this is going to be an AMAZING 7 weeks.

weird things:
-they have a rooster in the back yard
- mosquito eating salamander things everywhere - they freak me out

Day 2:

So far I´ve only experienced half a day of the simple life. If I can say anything about it, its that its UNREAL! I´m sooo in love with this place and SO grateful to everyone who helped get me here! There´s a McDonalds down the street and Im so tempted to go get a nice greasy cheeseburger :) BUT I will not..yet. The only thing stopping me if the fact that my brother would kill me for eating McDonalds in Costa Rica...which is fair I guess.

Since Day 2:

I´ve met all the volunteers! We meet at the pool everyday after work and then again at 8:30pm at the park. From there we either go to the supermarket and buy some beer that we can it in the park and drink or walk around with. Its the weirdest feeling walking around the city with bottles in my hands. There are volunteers from all over the world! Canada, US, England, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Netherlands etc...Lucklily they all speak decent English which is really nice! I´ve already made a bunch of friends and we´ve already planned weekend trips!

Easter in Central America is like a week long event, so school hasnt been running on a normal schedule this week. I went to the school I´ll be working at yesterday. Its only 3 classrooms big I think, and obviously completely different than what Im used to, but I like it. My first day is tomorrow!

A new volunteer is coming to live in my house today! So Im excited to go home and meet them!

Anyways, sorry for such a scattered post. I´ll try and organize my thoughts better next time and hopefully I´ll have more things to tell you about that arent just describing my jitters and excitement! Im just having a hard time keeping it together! haha

I LOVE this place! I´m a little homesick in the mornings when I wake up, but I´m already having the best time!

Love and miss you all. Hope everything is going great at home!! xoxox

Setting up this blog!

So this is my first blog post...to keep it easy for everyone I figured I would just use a similar name as the one Jordan gave his blog!

I'll try my best to keep everyone updated throughout my 7-week adventure!

Thanks so much to everyone for the support!

Love,

Kate
